Strengthening Cybersecurity and Ensuring Compliance: Implementing NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS in an Integrated and Efficient Manner

Industry: Technology | Duration: 1 month | Team size: 3 consultants

NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS impose far-reaching requirements on companies and organizations regarding information security, cybersecurity, and governance. While these frameworks pursue similar protection goals, they differ in their specific obligations, documentation requirements, and responsibilities. If addressed independently of one another, they can quickly lead to parallel structures and avoidable maintenance efforts. An integrated approach combines the requirements and systematically leverages existing security artifacts. This enables compliance to be achieved without compromising the company’s agility or operational performance. Clear roles and transparent decision-making ensure that measures are not only documented but also effectively implemented in practice. Artificial intelligence (AI) can support analysis and documentation, while the technical assessment remains consistently the responsibility of the relevant team. In this specific project, this resulted in a manageable model that combines NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS into a unified verification framework.

Challenge: Information Security Between Regulation and Operational Feasibility—Three Regulatory Frameworks and a Common Verification Logic

  • Several regulatory frameworks—NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS—set forth requirements that are, in part, similar but worded differently. Addressing them separately would have resulted in additional coordination efforts and redundant documentation.
  • Make targeted use of existing resources: Already established ISO and security documents should be retained and supplemented as needed. Without systematic categorization, valuable preliminary work would have been of limited use.
  • Transparent Responsibilities: Implementation required clear ownership of decisions, actions, and documentation. Unclear roles would have compromised the effectiveness of management in day-to-day operations.
  • Balancing compliance and business agility: Regulatory requirements had to be met without unnecessarily slowing down processes. Overly complex governance would have tied up operational resources and made it difficult to make quick decisions.
  • Expert-Reviewed AI Implementation: AI should efficiently support analysis and documentation. At the same time, it must be ensured that all results are reviewed and approved by the appropriate personnel.
  • Sustainable autonomy: The company needed a model that could be maintained internally after the project was completed. Technical or operational dependencies on external services were to be avoided.

Success Journey: Three Steps to Integrated Security Compliance

01

Analyze existing structures and map requirements to them
Existing ISO, ISMS, and security artifacts were compared against the requirements of NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS as part of a gap analysis. This process highlighted existing strengths and allowed for the targeted prioritization of necessary enhancements.

02

Integrating Governance, Evidence, and Measures
Based on the analysis, a common verification logic, standardized templates, and clear roles for decision-making and operational implementation were established. The integrated model prevents parallel maintenance and makes operational responsibilities transparent.

03

Empowering Implementation and Ensuring Autonomy
The responsible personnel were trained in methodology, documentation, and AI-supported workflows and implemented these changes during ongoing operations. This enables the company to continue developing its information security and compliance efforts on an ongoing basis without relying on external parties.

Summary: Information Security as an Integral Part of Operations

The joint implementation of NIS2, ISO 27001, and KRITIS combines regulatory compliance with operational agility. Instead of establishing three separate structures, existing ISMS and security artifacts were integrated into a unified methodology. Clear ownership, standardized templates, and traceable documentation make compliance manageable in day-to-day operations. AI supports recurring analysis and documentation without replacing the team’s technical responsibility. The key success factor was the clear division of responsibilities between methodological consulting and operational implementation. This resulted in a sustainable solution that ensures compliance and can be maintained independently by the company.
