Security Awareness for Sustainable Cyber Resilience in the Critical Transportation Sector
Industry: Public Transportation | Duration: 6 months | Team size: 2 consultants
Security awareness is an essential component of effective information security for companies in the critical transportation sector. Digital and operational processes must be reliably protected against cyberattacks, even as threats and attack methods continue to evolve. Technical security services alone are not enough, as many attacks begin with human error: a single click can leak data and information to the outside world and make a cyberattack possible in the first place. At the same time, NIS2 requires regular training and traceable measures to strengthen cyber resilience. The goal of the project was therefore to measurably and permanently strengthen the “human firewall.” Through the implementation of revel8’s security awareness platform, realistic phishing attack simulations are continuously delivered via email, SMS, phone, and video calls—tailored to role-based risk profiles, including deepfakes, i.e., AI-generated audio or video content that is deceptively realistic. Anyone who clicks on a simulation receives microlearning training at that very moment. The focus is on a mindset shift: It is not the click-through rate, but the reporting rate that is the decisive metric for security awareness.

Challenge: Growing Cyber Threats and Increasing Awareness Requirements
- Critical digital and operational processes
Cyberattacks can disrupt key services and operations in the transportation sector. That is why it was essential to establish secure behavior among the workforce as an integral part of cyber resilience. - Diverse social engineering attacks
Threats reach employees via email, text message, phone, and video calls. A careless click or a hasty disclosure of information over the phone can expose sensitive data and open the door for attackers to infiltrate the company. - Different Roles and Risk Profiles
Employees work with various types of data, information, and services. General training content would not have adequately addressed the specific requirements and risks associated with individual roles. - Sustainable Behavioral Development
One-time awareness campaigns produce only limited learning effects. A continuous approach with recurring reminders is necessary to ensure safe behavior over the long term. - Safe Reporting Practices and an Open Culture of Accountability
Suspicious contacts and potential attacks must be identified and reported early on. Those who are afraid of making mistakes are hesitant to report incidents—or may not report them at all—even though every prompt report strengthens the company’s security. - Transparent NIS2 Implementation
Training sessions and progress must be documented transparently. A lack of documentation would have made it difficult to manage and evaluate security awareness.

Impact At Launch: Continuous Security Awareness with Measurable Transparency
- Strengthened Human Firewall: Ongoing awareness initiatives through revel8 help employees recognize cyber threats early and respond to them safely.
- Realistic attack preparation: Simulations of phishing, smishing, and vishing replicate typical social engineering scenarios across multiple communication channels.
- Personalized scenarios: Content is tailored to roles and risk profiles. This increases the relevance of the exercises to participants' day-to-day work.
- Direct Microlearning: When you click on a simulation, you immediately receive a short microlearning module. This turns the experience into a learning opportunity with clear recommendations for action and reinforced knowledge.
- Improved reporting practices: Regular simulations promote safe handling of suspicious messages, calls, and inquiries and encourage the use of established reporting channels.
- Documented training progress: Participation and progress are recorded in a structured manner. This provides a solid foundation for NIS2-related documentation and information security management.
Summary: Security Awareness as an Integral Part of Cyber Resilience
Security awareness strengthens a company’s ability to protect its digital and operational processes against current cyber threats. Through ongoing awareness training, the client combines realistic simulations, personalized scenarios, and microlearning at the critical moment into a continuous learning approach. Employees are empowered to recognize social engineering across various communication channels and to report suspicious activity accurately. Live reporting provides transparency into reporting rates, awareness levels, and risk behavior, and supports a NIS2-aligned security organization. The key success factor is a shift in mindset: mistakes become learning opportunities, and it is the reporting rate—not the click-through rate—that reveals how strong the human firewall truly is.
