The Digital Product Passport is a standardized digital record that summarizes a product’s components, materials, and chemical substances, supplemented by information on repairability, replacement parts, and proper disposal. It makes product-related data digitally accessible throughout the entire life cycle: from raw material procurement through manufacturing and use to end-of-life.
Access is provided directly at the product—via a QR code, RFID chip, or NFC access point. A single scan grants access to the information authorized for the user.
What is behind the EU initiative?
The legal basis is the EU Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR—Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation), which entered into force on July 18, 2024. It is supplemented by the EU Battery Regulation and other sector-specific regulations.
With the DPP, the EU is pursuing three key objectives:
- Climate neutrality by 2050: Greater transparency regarding emissions and resource consumption throughout the entire supply chain
- Strengthening the circular economy: Repair, reuse, and recycling are facilitated by improved data availability

Products falling within the scope of the ESPR must have a Digital Product Passport in order to be sold on the EU market.
What data does a DPP include?
Depending on the product category and regulatory requirements, the following data may be stored in the DPP:
- Materials & Raw Materials: Origin, composition, percentage of recycled materials
- Production & Supply Chain: Manufacturers and suppliers involved, production sites
- Environment & Sustainability: carbon footprint, energy consumption, pollutants

In the long term, the DPP is to be expanded to cover a large portion of the product groups included in the ESPR.
The only exceptions are food and medicine.
Timeline: When exactly will it become mandatory?
The exact deadlines for ESPR product categories will not be determined until the respective delegated act is adopted, plus a transition period that often lasts about 18 months. Those who wait until their own delegated act is published will have little leeway. With an implementation period of six to twelve months, plus the time required to gather data from the supply chain, the window for structured preparation is narrow.
SME Relief: Small and medium-sized enterprises benefit from extended transition periods. For example, the ban on destroying unsold inventory will not apply to medium-sized companies (50–249 employees) until July 2030—four years after the requirement takes effect for large companies. Nevertheless, the rule remains: Those who begin preparations now should use future postponements as a buffer—not as a strategy.

The DPP only works with complete data from the entire supply chain. Each stakeholder is responsible for its own product data, from raw material suppliers to component manufacturers to the distributor of the final product.
