Digital Product Passport (DPP) Consulting: Prepare Your Company for the New EU Requirements in a Timely Manner

The Digital Product Passport is not an IT project. It is a data, integration, and supply chain project that requires an understanding of regulations, system architecture, process design, and supplier engagement all at once. The critical path is almost always obtaining reliable data from a multi-tiered supply chain.
Our DPP Consulting combines in-depth regulatory expertise with operational implementation capabilities: From impact analysis through data modeling and system integration to production rollout, we support companies end-to-end. With over 20 years of consulting experience in data architecture, PLM, ERP, supply chains, and sustainability, we lay the foundation to ensure that your Digital Product Passport is not only compliant but also generates real business value.

Executive Summary – Digital Product Passport Consulting at a Glance

Our Digital Product Passport Consulting: Services to Help You Achieve DPP Compliance

Implementing the Digital Product Passport is not purely an IT task. It requires a combination of regulatory expertise, data architecture, process design, and supply chain management. Our DPP Consulting covers all the aspects that companies need for structured preparation and productive implementation.

Which of your product groups fall under the ESPR, the Battery Regulation, or a sector-specific regulation? What are the applicable deadlines? What is your role: manufacturer, importer, or processor? We identify your DPP-relevant product groups, map them to regulatory requirements, and provide a clear impact analysis with product-group-specific deadlines. Available as a Quick Assessment for a fast start or as a Deep Assessment with a comprehensive modular analysis.

Where is your product data stored today: in ERP, PIM, PLM, MES, or Excel? Which required data points are available, and which are missing? Where are there gaps in the supply chain? We assess your existing data landscape for DPP readiness and provide a prioritized Data Gap Report, sorted by procurement effort and regulatory relevance. The Gap Report serves as the basis for decision-making regarding all further steps.

We compare your current status against all relevant regulatory requirements: ESPR, Delegated Acts, CEN/CENELEC standards, CBAM, the Construction Products Regulation, EUDR, REACH, and industry-specific guidelines. The result is a compliance calendar, a gap analysis, and a risk assessment across four dimensions: data availability, system capability, supplier readiness, and organizational integration.

The critical path of any DPP implementation is data collection from the supply chain. We assess your suppliers’ readiness: detailed analysis of critical Tier 1 suppliers, risk assessment for Tier 2 through 3 suppliers, data quality review, and development of a concrete engagement plan for supplier activation. This ensures that the required material data, CO₂ values, and certifications are available on time.

We define a structured data model for your Digital Product Passport, establish interfaces with existing systems (ERP, PLM, PIM, LCA tools, MES), and verify interoperability against current CEN/CENELEC draft standards. The data model is designed to be industry-specific: plant-specific granularity for steel, variant complexity for furniture, style explosion for textiles, and hardware and software dimensions for electronics.

We create an ROI-based business case, including a cost model; develop a scalable roadmap with clear phases (Gap Closure → Pilot → Rollout → Scaling); and recommend a DPP governance structure with roles, processes, and decision-making pathways. The roadmap is designed to be scalable beyond individual product groups to include additional categories and regulatory requirements.

We start with a product group or a plant, validate the end-to-end process using real data, and then scale it to other product groups, locations, and markets. The pilot includes product identification, data carriers (QR codes), machine-readable data output, and the registration process. This creates a validated blueprint for a company-wide rollout.

DPP Requirements by Industry: Find the guidelines for your sector

The ESPR does not introduce the Digital Product Passport across the board, but rather through product-group-specific delegated acts with their own data requirements, deadlines, and specific provisions. Each industry faces its own unique challenges in implementing the regulation. Find the relevant requirements for your sector here:

Prioritized product group in the ESPR work plan. CO₂ intensity at the product level, recycling rate, alloy composition, and production route are at the heart of the expected data requirements. The delegated act is expected in 2026, with the DPP requirement anticipated in 2027/2028.

DPP Requirements for Iron and Steel →

Complex, globally distributed supply chains make traceability a key challenge. Fiber type, material composition, substances of concern, environmental metrics, and recyclability form the core of the data requirements.

DPP Requirements for Textiles

The focus is on composite materials, material safety, durability, and reparability. Instructions for disassembly and recycling, as well as the availability of replacement parts, are expected to become mandatory.

DPP Requirements for Furniture

The industry-specific focus areas are the repairability index, software update cycles, critical raw materials, and energy efficiency. Short product cycles require highly automated DPP creation.

DPP Requirements for Electrical Appliances

In addition to the ESPR, the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR) also applies. Environmental product declarations, service life classes, dismantlability, and BIM compatibility play a central role. In the construction sector, the DPP for individual products is evolving into a material passport for entire buildings.

Here's what DPP Consulting offers you in partnership with Ventum Consulting

With a validated DPP for all affected product groups, you can ensure that your products can continue to be sold in the EU single market even after the respective deadlines. No listing restrictions, no exclusion from tenders.

The database built for the DPP can be directly integrated with CSRD reporting, the EU Taxonomy, CBAM documentation, and ESG reporting. A single data foundation instead of parallel data collections.

Products with demonstrably lower CO₂ intensity, a higher percentage of recycled content, or documented repairability can be specifically positioned as premium products. The DPP makes sustainability verifiable rather than merely claimed.

Companies that engage their suppliers early on and establish data flows gain a structural advantage. DPP data collection is shifting from a risk factor to a competitive differentiator.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Product Passport (DPP) Consulting

A digital product passport is a machine-readable data record that accompanies a product throughout its entire life cycle. It can be accessed via a unique identifier and a QR code on the product and, depending on the product group, contains information on material composition, carbon footprint, recycled content, reparability, and disposal. The legal basis is the EU Ecodesign Regulation ESPR (EU) 2024/1781.

For batteries, the date is set for February 18, 2027. Under the ESPR, textiles, electronics, iron and steel, household appliances, and mattresses will follow between 2027 and 2028. Tires will be added in 2028, furniture from 2028 to 2029, and construction products and metals from 2029 to 2030. Each product group has its own delegated act and its own effective date.

Any company that places products on the market in the EU: manufacturers, importers, processors, and retailers with private-label brands. This requirement applies regardless of where the company is headquartered. A Chinese manufacturer that sells through an EU importer is subject to the same requirements.

Primary loss of market access: Without a valid DPP, affected products may no longer be sold in the EU. This is compounded by potential fines under national law and listing restrictions imposed by retailers and platforms. B2B buyers will increasingly use DPP completeness as a criterion for awarding contracts.

In practice, it takes 6 to 12 months to set up a productive infrastructure. The critical path is almost always data collection from the supply chain, not the technology. Companies with multi-tier supply chains and a broad product portfolio should expect longer lead times.

Typically, these include ERP, PIM, and PLM systems, as well as—depending on the industry—MES, CAD systems, LCA tools, service databases, or product configurators. The DPP requires integration across multiple systems. Our assessment evaluates the interoperability of your existing landscape.

No. The requirement applies exclusively to products that are placed on the EU market for the first time on or after the respective effective date. Existing stock is exempt.

Yes. Companies that establish DPP data early on can demonstrably market sustainable products (e.g., “low-carbon steel”), better respond to RFP requests, streamline ESG reporting, and develop new business models in take-back, second-life, and the circular economy.
