Assessments

Industry 4.0 assessment – gain clarity before you invest

Many companies in production and industry face a similar dilemma: digitalization offers enormous potential – but at the same time, historically evolved IT/OT landscapes, a lack of data quality, isolated solutions, unstable systems, security gaps and unclear responsibilities make it difficult to implement properly. Bad investments are made where the first step is not to understand, but to implement directly. Our Industry 4.0 assessment creates transparency across business processes, production, OT/IT, data and organization – and provides a realistic, prioritized roadmap for your digital maturity level, your smart factory projects and your future transformation.

Your highlights at a glance:

Services of our Industry 4.0 assessment

The assessment is based on targeted interviews, plant inspections and the analysis of your digital industrial landscape – and is always individually tailored to your company.

Objective: Clean demarcation so that the assessment is reliable.

We clarify:

  • Plants, lines, product families in scope
  • Business targets (OEE, scrap, energy, lead times, auditability)
  • Relevant systems (ERP, MES, SCADA, Historians, CMMS, QMS …)
  • Important roles (production, maintenance, QA, OT/IT, security, works council)

Result: Interview schedule, document list, appointment grid.

Focus: Bringing business & store floor together

We analyze:

  • KPI system & measuring points (resilient or assumption?)
  • Process losses: downtimes, micro-stops, set-up times, rejects
  • Decision logic on the store floor
  • Process variability (batch sizes, product mix, susceptibility to faults)

Result:
5-10 precise observations + leverage map where digitization really brings benefits.

Focus: Scalability & operability

We consider:

  • OT networks, segmentation, protocols, data rates
  • MES, SCADA, PLC, ERP, CMMS, QMS, BI & interfaces
  • Operation and maintenance: patch and retrofit capability, remote maintenance, backup/restore, IT/OT demarcation
  • Typical scaling traps

Result:
Architectural as-is picture, integration/scaling risks & future viability.

Focus: Quality, reliability, context & responsibilities of data

We analyze:

  • Data sources & data flows from machine to reporting
  • Data quality: timestamps, units, consistency, gaps
  • Traceability and quality data: Batch/series logic, inspection characteristics, traceability
  • Ownership and responsibility: definitions, amendment rights, “single source of truth”

Result:
Clear data readiness picture with key gaps + actionable governance proposal.

Focus: Security as an enabler

We check:

  • Access models: remote access, admin accounts, service providers, IT/OT transitions
  • Network and zone logic: segmentation, firewalls, monitoring, logging
  • Asset transparency: inventory, EOL risks, patch reality
  • Relevant specifications pragmatically categorized: IEC 62443, NIS2, GDPR touch points

Result:
Risk hit list with prioritized measures (MUST / SHOULD / CAN) and clear responsibilities.

Focus: the operating model behind the technology

We analyze:

  • Roles & responsibilities (data, interfaces, dashboards, models)
  • Ability to change and learn in production, maintenance and QA
  • Decision-making and governance structures for standards and new projects
  • Management of suppliers and integrators

Result:
Organizational readiness picture + governance draft.

Focus: decision-making ability

Readiness score per area:

  • Selective / fragile – not scalable
  • Partly solid – targeted measures necessary
  • Largely standardized – operable and scalable

Roadmap logic:

  • Stabilize: Reduce risks, create foundations
  • Enable: Establish integration and operational capability
  • Piloting & scaling: Only then roll out use cases

Result:
Roadmap with a clear sequence, three time horizons, rough budget corridors & decision points.

Who is the Industry 4.0 Assessment suitable for?

  • Management & plant management
  • Production, OT, IT and digitalization managers
  • Data/Automation teams
  • Companies with several plants or a high product mix
  • Organizations that want to implement Industry 4.0 in a structured & scalable way

Industry 4.0 Assessment: Group size, location & format, costs

To ensure that organization, time and impact fit together perfectly, we clarify the framework conditions at an early stage and tailor the format, scope and depth to your company.

    FAQ - Industry 4.0 Assessment

Because many Industry 4.0 initiatives fail if data, architecture, OT security or organizational logics are not resilient. Without a clean as-is status, pilot traps, expensive integration errors or inefficient solutions that do not scale later arise. The assessment provides clarity about the maturity level, risks and priorities – and prevents investments from coming to nothing.

Most companies receive valuable insights after just a few days: critical risks, integration hurdles, top gaps and initial recommendations for action. The final readiness analysis and roadmap provide a complete picture within 10-15 working days, which can be used directly in steering and budget rounds. The effect is immediately operationally usable.

For a realistic assessment, production, OT, IT, maintenance, quality, engineering, security and – depending on the context – the works council and data teams must be involved. The assessment only works if technical, organizational and operational perspectives are considered together. Experience shows: The more diverse the interview partners, the more reliable the result.

The score evaluates each area – production, OT/IT, data, security, organization – according to clearly defined criteria. It not only shows “red/yellow/green”, but also provides a differentiated depth of the causes, dependencies and consequences. Companies then know exactly where and why something is not scalable or not secure and which measures generate which benefits.

Companies can implement the roadmap independently or involve Ventum Consulting for piloting, architecture design, security hardening, data readiness programs or change management. The assessment serves as a foundation for setting up projects in a controlled, secure and economically sensible manner – and prevents digital initiatives from getting stuck in pilot status.

Yes – in particular. Many companies have implemented individual use cases (predictive maintenance, dashboards, automation), but without scalability, integration or governance. The assessment shows how these islands can be productively connected, unified and scaled – and which technical and organizational gaps have so far blocked scaling.

All analyses are strictly confidential on the basis of an NDA. No productive data is copied or exported; the assessment only uses documents provided, screen sharing and on-site inspection. It does not actively interfere with OT or production systems. Security and data protection are paramount.

Thanks to the clearly structured readiness report, prioritized risk lists, leverage map, profitability argumentation, scenarios and a roadmap ready for immediate decision-making. The assessment provides exactly the documents that are needed in steering committees, budget rounds or investment committees – precise, fact-based and without any risk of interpretation.
