Contents and procedure of the Power BI training
Basic Training (1 day)
- Overview: Components of Power BI – ETL with Power Query, data model and calculations with DAX, visuals and sharing via the Power BI Service
- Data literacy & BI basics: dimensions, facts, measures – clearly explained, best practices for clean data and clear visualizations
- Power BI vs. Excel: differences, advantages and disadvantages, when which solution makes sense
- ETL with Power Query: Importing data from different sources (e.g. Excel, CSV, web data), working with the query editor, handling large data sets, appending tables
- Visualization in practice: line and bar charts for temporal progressions, card for key figures, matrix with settings; interaction with slicers, filters and cross filters; drill-through hierarchies from rough to detailed, integration of external visuals
- Power BI Service: Set up workspaces, share reports (direct vs. app), collaboration and updating
Advanced Training (2 days)
- Power BI Desktop: Architecture, environment and project setup
- Data modeling: central concepts, relationships, star schema, high-performance model design for large amounts of data
- DAX: Basics (Queries, Columns, Measures) and advanced patterns (Time Intelligence, Iterator Functions) for KPIs, trends and comparisons
- M (Power Query): Joins, data types, complex transformations, incremental loading processes and robust ETL routes
- Visuals & reporting: advanced formatting, tooltips, drilldowns, use of external visuals, reporting best practices for management and specialist departments
- Power BI Service & Governance: workspaces, apps, row-level security (RLS), access models, approvals, scheduled updates, deployment pipelines and cross-team collaboration
