CBAM Celonis solution explained in an expert interview

The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is more than just a new regulation – it is a key instrument of the European Green Deal that fundamentally changes the rules of the game for importers. The aim is to prevent carbon leakage and create a level playing field for European companies that are already investing in more climate-friendly production.

A major component of CBAM is reporting, which importers of certain emission-intensive product groups have been obliged to do since October 2023. We explain who exactly is affected by this in our detailed article on CBAM reporting obligations and CBAM default values. This obligation affects almost the entire manufacturing and processing industry. The challenge is enormous: detailed direct and indirect emissions – including those from upstream products – must be obtained, verified and reported by suppliers for every imported item. Seamless and precise data collection across the entire supply chain is therefore essential.

Mastering complex CBAM challenges - an interview with our expert

How can companies ensure that they receive the complex emissions data not only from their direct Tier 1 suppliers, but also from their upstream suppliers (Tier N)? How do you maintain an overview of the reporting status and ensure the correct allocation to customs information?
Our expert Britta Felzmann answers precisely these questions in this interview. We talk about how a specialized solution in conjunction with Celonis Process Mining can help importers master CBAM requirements. Find out how the end-to-end supply chain is covered, how suppliers are effectively integrated and how transparency is created throughout the entire reporting process.

How can the entire end-to-end supply chain be covered by the CBAM solution? So not just Tier 1, but Tier N suppliers?

Behind the Celonis application is our connected solution for querying suppliers’ emission values. The suppliers enter the emission values via a guided user interface. These are then fed back into Celonis. In order to cover the end-to-end supply chain, suppliers control the query of their suppliers’ emission values themselves. This covers the entire supply chain – importers only need to contact their Tier 1 suppliers, who in turn control the query from their direct suppliers.

How do suppliers know how to complete the survey?

In order to increase the rate of suppliers responding to the surveys as much as possible, we provide suppliers with a simple, UI-guided environment. Here suppliers will find various materials – in video and written format – and in the languages that are relevant to the suppliers. If suppliers still have problems completing the survey, Ventum Consulting is always on hand to help with any queries.

How can you keep an overview of the process via Celonis and how do you know how complete the reporting is?

As an importer, you get a full overview of the current status of supplier surveys in Celonis – and this at the granular level of all your imports. The data in Celonis is continuously updated – so you always know how complete your reporting is and can follow up if necessary to speed up the survey process.

How does the mapping between customs information and the orders created in the ERP system work?

We support the merging of customs tariff numbers and the orders in your ERP system on an individual basis. Depending on whether you already have a solution in place or are still at the beginning of the mapping process, we will work with you to provide a suitable solution. We can use automation to make matching as simple and scalable as possible.

How does the CBAM Control App ensure the extended validation and integrity of different supplier data?

The validation of the emission-related information in the CBAM Control App is carried out in a multi-stage process that is specifically designed to ensure compliance with the CBAM specifications. First, it is classified whether the submitted emission values are standard values, estimates or verified values. Based on this, the app – in combination with Celonis – uses contextual information from ERP and customs data to check the plausibility of the declared emissions. For example, unusual emission levels are detected in relation to product type, origin and material composition. In the event of conspicuous or incorrect information, automatic feedback is sent to the reporting process: the affected data record is rejected and a correction workflow is initiated with the respective supplier. This ensures that only traceable, correct and CBAM-compliant emission values are processed and reported.

CBAM Control App for automated reporting

CBAM software can significantly simplify the workload for companies. This is particularly easy with our CBAM Control App, which we offer in two versions: for Celonis users and as a standalone solution without Celonis. For Celonis users, we offer a seamlessly integrated CBAM Control App that has been specially developed for the Celonis environment. It enables a direct connection to your existing processes, automates reporting and ensures maximum transparency.

For companies without Celonis, we have developed a standalone version that works independently of existing systems. This solution offers the same core functions, such as automated data collection, validation and report generation. Both versions help you to meet CBAM requirements efficiently and securely – and actively support you in reducing your carbon footprint.

Conclusion: Efficient CBAM compliance with Celonis

The CBAM requirements, in particular the seamless recording of emissions data across the entire supply chain (Tier-N), pose considerable challenges for companies. As became clear in the interview with our expert Britta Felzmann, the combination of Celonis Process Mining and a specialized solution such as the CBAM Control App offers a decisive advantage.

The app not only enables automated data collection and reporting, but also efficient, multilingual communication with suppliers and creates full transparency about the reporting status. The ability to integrate Tier N suppliers indirectly via Tier 1 partners and monitor the process centrally in Celonis reduces complexity and ensures compliance.
